The River Avon (Devon)
Sea Trout Fishing on the River Avon
The River Avon, also
known as the River Aune, rises in the southern half
of Dartmoor National Park in an area of bog to the west of
Ryder's Hill. After leaving the moor it passes through South
Brent and then Avonwick and Aveton Gifford to enter the sea
at Bigbury on Sea.

Sea Trout Fishing on the River Avon
The little river Avon in Devon can provide
excellent trout fishing and excellent Sea Trout fishing,
with 290 recorded in the 2008 season. The upper section of
the river is primarily brown trout water with good fishing
from March but with the chance of a sea trout, or even
salmon, later in the year. A few large sea trout run early
in the season but it is May before there is a realistic
prospect of good sea trout sport, which can be expected to
improve with the lengthening days. The river is fly only
until the end of the Sea Trout fishing season when spinning
for salmon is permitted until the season's end in November.
For sea trout at night when the river is at summer level a
rod of nine feet or so, in conjunction with floating line,
is adequate. The
Avon Fishing Association
controls large sections of the river and
sells weekly tickets which can be purchased from Loddiswell
post office for around £60
with a monthly permit for £95 (2012 rates).
