Most salmon rivers in the British Isles will also
have an annual run of sea trout. While the timing of the salmon runs
varies from river to river and from one part of the country to
another, the main sea trout runs are generally concentrated through
the summer months, often beginning in May and continuing into August
or perhaps September. On some rivers, particularly those renowned
for their salmon fishing, such as the Scottish rivers Spey and Dee,
the sea trout fishing invariably takes second place to the salmon
fishing, although, through the prime sea trout fishing months of
June and July, the sea trout can often provide superlative night
time sport for those with sufficient stamina to fish both day and
night, or for those who place a high value on the sporting qualities
of the sea trout. Other rivers, notably some of the Welsh rivers,
such as the Towy, Dovey and Teifi, are known more as sea trout (or
sewin) rivers than salmon rivers, their sea trout generally
outnumbering the salmon many times over. Other rivers, such as the
English rivers Tyne and Wear, have good runs of both species,
providing varied opportunities for sport with both salmon and sea
trout throughout the season.
