The Yorkshire Esk
Sea Trout Fishing on the Yorkshire Esk
The Yorshire Esk has its source in Westerdale
Moor and flows the 28 miles to empty into the North Sea at
Whitby. Once one of the most productive salmon rivers in
England, the Esk still produces good numbers of sea trout,
with 493 sea trout recorded in the 2008 season.
The Yorkshire Esk at Lealholm
Sea Trout Fishing on the Yorkshire Esk
It is around Castleton that the river becomes of interest to
the angler, producing trout and grayling throughout the
season and salmon and sea trout given a bit of water. This
stretch is mainly under control of Danby & District Angling
Club who offer excellent value season permits at around £15,
available from Duke Of Wellington in Danby and the local
Post Office. There are various stretches of free fishing,
for example at Lealholm, where the main pool in the village
can hold good shoals of sea trout. Night time fly fishing
offers the best chance of catching these wary fish. More
public fishing is available at Rakes Common at Glaisdale,
where salmon and sea trout might fall to fly or spinner on a
falling spate. A mile or so downstream is the popular free
stretch at Limber Hill which can be productive late in the
season. There is also some free fishing at Sleights which
can produce fish to spinner on a spate. The middle river is
mainly under the control of the more exclusive Esk Fisheries
Association which has rights over 16 miles
of river running from near the village of Lealholm to
Sleights, and other local angling clubs. Some of the
best fishing on the river is available at Egton Bridge from
the Egton Estate.
