The River Cree
Sea Trout Fishing on the River
Cree
The Cree runs from Loch Moan to the Solway
Firth below Newton Stewart. Afforestation in its upper
course has led to a faster run off after rain and increased
acidification, both of which have an adverse effect on the
fishing. Nevertheless, salmon and sea trout can still be
taken in the lower section of the river, which has some good
fly fishing water.

River Cree Sea Trout Fishing
The West Galloway Fisheries Trust is making
efforts to improve the river habitat to halt the decline in
stocks of migratory fish. Recent sport has been confined to
the lower 8 miles of river, from its confluence with the
Minnoch to its outfall in Wigtown Bay. Annual catches have
fallen in recent times, from around 400 salmon in the late
eighties to an average of around 200 today, with a similar
decline in sea trout catches. The best months for sea trout
are June and July, while the most productive months for
salmon are September and October.
Newton Stewart & District Angling Association
makes fishing available
on a daily or weekly basis for visitors, or through
association membership for local permanent residents, or for
associate membership for non residents. All options
represent excellent value for money.
